Okay, so there’s a lot of these “date a [insert sex here] who reads” going around, and all of them hinge on the idea of being a reader. But my question is, and maybe it’s a silly one, what exactly is a reader? What qualifies? I think we can all agree that these posts are not simply talking about dating someone who is literate.
Is it volume? Does the number of books you read make you a reader? What if someone only reads romance novels? Are they still a reader? I hate romance novels, but I have friends who love them and read a few a week. Are they more of a reader than I am because I don’t read that much?
What about someone who only reads classics? Are they more of a reader than someone who enjoys the Dan Brown novel of the moment?
And how about adults who read YA books? Is their reading less valuable than that classics reader?
Fan fiction readers?
We haven’t even touched on fans of nonfiction.
I love making notes in the margins of books, but I know some people who would think of that as defacement of a pure page. Am I less respectful of books than they?
And there’s the literary snob who shoves their summer reading list in your face and down your throat. Are they the glorified reader?
I don’t have any answers here. But people seem to be taking these “date a [blank] who [blanks]” rather seriously. They’re kind of hokey and sentimental. Which is what they’re supposed to be. But people who are getting all offended about it, well that’s just kind of ridiculous. These posts don’t touch on what a reader is, because they’re speaking about the original writers preferences. I have my own definition of what it means to be a reader, but “reader” is subjective. Take these posts with a huge grain of salt and move on.
Oh, and get the fuck away from my books with cheetoh dust on your fingers.
